More information:

Esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD) is a diagnostic endoscopic procedure that visualizes the upper part of the gastrointestinal tract through the duodenum. When you are experiencing symptoms such as severe abdominal pain, chronic heartburn, vomiting blood, or any other GI symptoms, EGD can help determine the cause and make a clear diagnosis. We now offer balloon dilation as an option for upper endoscopy patients. Balloon dilation is a procedure performed to treat narrowed areas in the esophagus, stomach, or duodenum. During the procedure, a deflated balloon is positioned at the site of the stricture and then gradually inflated to stretch and widen the narrowed passage. Once the desired dilation is achieved, the balloon is deflated and removed, allowing for improved passage of food and liquids.

The benefits of balloon dilation include relief from difficulty swallowing, improved digestion, and enhanced overall quality of life for individuals with strictures caused by conditions like EoE, GERD, scarring, or post-surgical narrowing. It is a minimally invasive, effective, and relatively quick procedure with a low risk of complications, often allowing patients to resume normal activities shortly afterward.
