NP and PA Students Training Objectives
Overall Educational Goals
The purpose of our program is to introduce future NPs and PAs to allergy, immunology, and GI specialties. Students will gain an appreciation and understanding of advanced, specialized diseases, as well as when it is appropriate to refer to specialists for allergy and GI care. Students will work with Dr. Leung one on one to tailor their experiences to their interests. Those interested in primary care will gain an understanding of common allergic and GI conditions and when to refer to specialists for management. Those interested in specializing in allergy or GI later on will gain a deeper understanding of common allergic and GI diseases, which may prepare them for their future careers.
Learning Activities
The principle learning activity for NP and PA students involves assessment of patients in outpatient allergy and GI clinic. Previous NP and PA students have shadowed Dr. Leung, taken patient histories, and scribed treatment plans. Students will also be involved in presenting journal articles during staff meetings.
Anecdotes from Previous NP Students
Max, BC Nurse Practitioner Program, 2023: “Dr. Leung’s clinic offers a variety of opportunities to learn. He runs a fast-paced clinical environment that pushes NP students to grow into the role of being a provider.”
